From public kindergarten classes to respected colleges and universities, every effort is made to ensure that local curricula meet or surpass state and national standards. Indeed, the Escambia School District consistently graduates students who score higher on aptitude tests than the state or national average. Each year local students place well at state and national academic fairs and competitions. As the area grows, so does the school system; now the 88th largest in the nation. Over 44,000 students attend in grades K-12 in the district’s 74 schools and centers. There are also vocational and technical schools to complement the system. A fleet of 360 school buses transport students to class each day in one of the most efficient and cost-effective transportation systems in the country. The Escambia School District offers several magnet programs that provide a choice of attendance outside of the assigned school boundaries. Magnet schools were launched in the 1970s in an effort to unite children of all social, racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds by offering quality, specialized programs in education. The Escambia County parents and community are proud of their public schools. The district enthusiastically welcomes visitors to their schools so that they might see first-hand the wonderful and exciting things happening in their classrooms.
